Search Engine Tips and Tricks

Search engines, these high tech yellow pages, are becoming increasingly impossible to work with. The top engines now receive upwards of 7000 submissions per day. If you haven't seen the latest on Yahoo! let me fill you in. Now, when you submit, you are given two options: you can submit the "old fashioned" way. Wait your 8 to 10 weeks to see if the Yahoo reviewer considers your site as a fit or rejects it. Or, you can now opt to pay $199.00 per submission, to be guaranteed to be considered for inclusion within 7 to 10 days. Yes, you've read it right! ....only considered. They're quick to point out that your $199.00 does not guarantee you a listing.

This section is dedicated to Jeaneen of bodyhealer.com and all of our new clients!

Paid Search Engine Listings are one way of bringing on immediate traffic while you wait for your site to be spidered by other search engines.

  1. Spend $199.00 with Yahoo!
To our opinion this is the best investment you can make in your site marketing! Take time to study how Yahoo returns results of your searches. Here is how to prepare submission to Yahoo with he most effective results.

Write down your most important keywords. We will take a look at keyword

'herbal medicine'. If you use this search word set in Yahoo, see how the results appear. Click here to see the search results for herbal medicine (it will open new window). - Note which categories show up first. You want to select the most appropriate category that appears closest to the top, or as many relevant categories as possible- if you are a business, be sure to select category under Business/Companies. - Next note that websites with words Herbal and Medicine in the title appear on the search results - if you click on the category there, you will see many more sites listed, but only those that have those specific words in their TITLE will actually show up in the first search result. It would be great if you could incorporate your most important keyword (s) into your site title. If Herbal Medicine are your keywords, you may want to rename your site title to Healthstore.Com Herbal Medicine - instead of placing your title to be only Healthstore.com into Yahoo listing. Yahoo Editor will most likely erase that part of your title unless your site images and actual titles reflect it as well (you may want to consider changing your site title for this reason). - Next note how the site descriptions come in - only those sites with words herbal and or medicine show up in the results. You only have about one line of description - see like all the other site on search results - so use it wisely. Select your most precious keywords, if you already have one keyword in the site title, no need to repeat it in the description, use those 10 or so words that fit into one line wisely - because this is the base how your site will come up on searches in Yahoo. This would be the sample of Yahoo Listing: (we are looking to come up as a result under the following keywords: herbal medicine, nutritional supplements, vitamins, holistic healing products.) TITLE: Healthstore.Com Holistic Healing DESCRIPTION: offering herbal medicine products, nutritional supplements and vitamins. Once you craft your title and description, be sure all links on your site are working and that there is no area of your site under construction, then go submit to Yahoo! by conducting drilling down to the CATEGORY you want to be listed at and clicking on Suggest a Site link on the very bottom on the page that displays listings.

Pay-Per-Click Search Engines.

This section is dedicated to Doree of www.artisticsweets.com, our long time customer.

With careful planing and some hard work you can create an immediate
sales revenue for new as well as well established sites. Doree's Company
makes cookie baskets, so here is a custom guide how to maximize her business
on pay-per-click search engines.

Here are our best producing links to pay for click search engines:

  • FINDWHAT.com - set up an account here once you have an account - in findwhat there is a tool in keyword center tab which will help you find related keywords to bid on in the box, put in just the TOP WORD, like COOKIE and it will help you find related terms - such as COOKIE BOUQUET or TOP WORD BASKET will suggest GIFT BASKETS, GIFT BASKET, FRUIT BASKET, or GIFT will bring up word sets like CORPORATE GIFTS, PERSONALIZED GIFTS or UNIQUE GIFT IDEAS. The idea is to find as many of these secondary words as possible and bid on ALL OF THEM - especially the ones with less searches, since less people bid on those less searched terms. You may find that if you wanted to be in top 3 positions on term GIFTS , it would cost you 61 cents today, but being in top #1 position under related term PERSONALIZED GIFTS is only 19 cents to be number one. Also bid only on terms that are highly relevant to your business - the idea is to bring only those visitors who are truly interested in your product, so I would not bid on FREE GIFTS as it would bring the wrong audience to your site, and there is no sense paying for visitors who are not likely to buy. Drill down these words to a third level GIFT = first level - it brings related keywords e.g. second level = 61 cents GIFT IDEA = second level - = 35 cents = enter some of those in the search window to bring up 3rd level ROMANTIC GIFT IDEA = 3rd level ----ONLY 5 cents to be number 1 !!!! I would rather have 100 third level terms at 5 cents and show up number one then one term from first level, paying through the nose. It is a lot of work - but believe me - it pays off in terms of orders. Your advertising dollars - if spent wisely according to my "recipe" will pay for themselves and turn into profits immediately.
  • Our second favorite is WWW.GOTO.COM sign up here once you have an account created, the keyword search tool is under this sequence of links/buttons: MANAGE LISTINGS (bottom) - ADD A LISTING - SEARCH SUGGESTION TOOL (link on right hand side of the page under TOOLS) --- IT IS HELPFUL TO login to your account twice - having two browser windows open so one browser window is used to look up search terms and the other is used to add new terms. --- Try to come up not with dozens but hundreds of terms - drill each possible term - such as GIFT, CORPORATE, GIFT IDEA, PARTY, BOUQUETS, COMPANY, PERSONALIZED, CUSTOM, UNIQUE, BUSINESS, PROMOTION, EMPLOYEE, CORPORATE, PRESENT, birthday, Valentine, Easter (the keyword suggestions are searches from previous month - so you will not find many Valentine Day related searches in September - so if you really wanted to get a good picture on Valentine Day searches, you would need to wait till MARCH - when the search engines publish results for February - then save those for next year... --- If there are common spelling errors in your search word, for example many people may misspell to make a typo in the word Corporate, typing it in as Corprate, be sure to find those words and bid as well - much less competition = lower cost.
  • Our OTHER favorites are KANOODLE.COM https://safe.kanoodle.com/client_services/sign_up/basic.cool 7SEARCH.COM http://7search.com/scripts/advertiser/submit_1.asp?option=Paying ROCKETLINKS http://www8.bay9.com/cgi-local/step1.cgi?link=&clicktrade=&session= These 3 pay-per-click search engines are smaller so deal with those only after you have goto.com and findwhat.com all set up.
  • We are also getting great results on Google - but it is more expensive because it is PER EXPOSURE not PER CLICK advertising - so hold off with Google for about a month or month and a half until you learn from pay per click which words bring you the best clicks, then sign up for an account at Google: https://ads.google.com/AdWords/Welcome.html Good luck and work hard - first set yourself limit to not to bid more than 5 cents and start tracking clicks through Webtrends visitor reports we provide, also you will see increase in orders, so track those extra orders and if everything you are doing works similar to our results, you will see that for every dollar spent in advertising you are making 5 or more dollars in profit - PROFIT - not SALES. Log in to your advertising accounts daily or every other day and adjust your bids upward or downward - you want to be in top 3 positions wherever you can but you do not want to pay too much. TRACK YOUR advertising expenditures for the first week or two. Track your orders for the same period and determine (best guess will do) which orders came from paid advertising. Then subtract advertising expenditure from the gross profit. The you can determine if you can raise you bid maximum per visitor. You can always calculate average that you pay for a visitor, just add up all the money you spent on advertising and how many visitors it brought you (all these search engines provide good reports on that) and there you will arrive to how much per visitor average you currently pay. IF your profit stays healthy then you can mentally raise the maximum bid threshold on your most desirable terms, that's when you can afford to up your bid ceiling from the 5 cents to 10 cents or more. We currently bid up to 78 cents on certain terms and stay profitable - but would never pay $3.00 like other do since that would take our profits south. It is important to aim for as many terms to be within top 3 results on pay- per-click search engines. Goto.com has special arrangement with AOL, Netscape, Altavista and other major search engines so the top 3 listings will show up on first page of their search results - but only top 3 - so if you are No. 4 - no cigar. We would love to hear your feedback once you try it - that would be our reward for sharing this knowledge. If you do not have time to set up those accounts and need our help to set up your keywords on pay-per-click search engines, let us know - we may be able to help. This service is usually billed at hourly rate and is only available based on the current work load of our pay-per-click search engine specialist.
  • Auto Spider Search Engines.

    1. Your site needs to have visitor reports, so you can track which search engine listing brings you most traffic! This result oriented measurement is most effective. We have learned through our visitor reports that some search engine listings are worthless and bring no traffic at all, where as others translate into a gold mine of targeted visitors to your website. If your provider does not offer visitor reports, ask them to do so or review our web hosting rates. Your can Order Site Transfer including search engine submission here.
    2. Make sure your web pages have appropriate META TAGS. These are keywords and descriptions -- optimized to work on most search engines. If you are not sure if your site has Meta Tags or need one of our experts to help you determine their effectiveness, please email Marketing Department for assistance.
    3. Start submitting to search engines. There are 100's of search engines but only dozen or so are those really used by internet audiences for general searches. Start with submission of your home page, later you may submit additional pages, that however varies from search engine to search engine. Here is a latest info on how many pages will be accepted by individual search engine (Our Table of Search Engines Daily Page Limit per Website (as of 11/16/98):
      • Infoseek - 50 pages per day (but we suggest no more than 25 pages per day. And here is a tip for Infoseek: wait 30 minutes between each url submission.)
      • Altavista - 1 page per day from your domain
      • Excite - 1 page per day (note: it must be your topmost (index) page. (They no longer accept yourdomain.com/page1.htm instead they ask you just submit the root domain and let them spider the rest.)
      • Hotbot - 50 pages per day
      • Northern Light - no limits
      • Lycos - no limits
      • Webcrawler - 25 pages per day)
We can also submit to search engines for you, to order one time one page search engine submission,
    4. Home page only to Google, as long as it has links to the rest of your site.
    5. *Make your site easy to "spider"

Search engines determine your web pages relevancy to particular keywords,
based on a huge number of factors, like: Title, Text, Meta Tags, Keyword
density, link popularity, age, and a ton more!

One EASY way to help get your site indexed higher with the search engines
is to let them do the work, by spidering your web site, and indexing your web
      pages as a result.

You see, there are two basic ways to get your pages into the search engine
databases: (1) you tell them, by submitting your pages, or (2) they spider
your site, and index all the pages they find.

Apparently, the search engines trust the results of their own spiders a little
better than they trust any of our submissions to their databases. As a
result, the search engines will typically give a higher ranking to pages that
they spidered, than to pages that are submitted to them.

So, even if you submit your entire site to the search engines (but be careful
see the first tip of the day above), your submitted pages would be ranked
lower than they would be had the pages been found by the search engines
      spider.

What do you do? You make your site easier to spider, thats what! ;)

Here are three tips to make your site easy to spider. (The goal of each of
these tips is to make sure that your main page is linked to the other pages in
      your site.)

Tip 1- Make a Contents Page
Make a contents page that has a link to each and every page on your site.
Make sure that the index page (the index.html page) has a link to this contents
page. It would be a good idea to include a link to this contents page on the index
page of each directory in your site, too.

Tip 2- Instruct the spiders to index & to follow links
Include the following meta tag in the HEAD section of your HTML documents:
      <meta name="robots" content="index,follow">
-This instructs all spiders visiting your site to index this page, and spider
(or follow) the links on this page for other pages to index.
If you do not want a spider to index any particular page, use this meta tag
      instead:
      <meta name=robots content=noindex,nofollow>
-This instructs the spiders, do not to index this page, and dont follow the
      links on it either.
    6. "PUT YOUR NAME IN LIGHTS -- List your business with search
engines to make sure potential customers can find it."

-- BIZ Excite, PC Computing magazine, November 1998

THE BASICS: HOW SEARCH ENGINES RANK YOUR SITE

When you submit your website to a search engine to be indexed in
its database, it sends a "robot" to scan your page.

Using complex algorithms to rank your page for keyword
relevance, the "robot" determines whether you'll be ranked number
1 or 1,000,000 when potential visitors conduct a search looking
      for sites like yours.

Because the search engines are constantly changing their
algorithms to provide users with the best possible search results,
there's only one true solution to high search engine placement-- series of
web pages, each of them configured to special keyword combination.

In short, submission alone isn't enough. *Good search engine
ranking* is critical to your site's success.
Our Marketing Team can help you to reconfigure individual pages of your site and submit to top search engines on individual basis. Order the service now!
